MUSKOGEE, Okla. — October 28, 2024 — Muskogee Public Schools proudly introduces Read, Play, Talk, a district-wide initiative aimed at promoting early literacy and developmental skills through engaging family activities. This initiative empowers families to build connections and encourages a love of reading and learning from birth.
At the heart of this initiative is the Read Play Talk Bus, a newly designed mobile library that brings books and experiences directly to Muskogee neighborhoods. Some community members may have already spotted the bus at our recent Homecoming Parade or the Boo-nanza event this past weekend. Once fully operational by Spring 2025, the Read Play Talk Bus will be available at additional community events, on weekends, and throughout the summer, providing year-round support for student literacy.
Last week, Muskogee Public Schools welcomed KJRH News with reporter Naomi Keitt to share the excitement around Read, Play, Talk and the difference it’s set to make. The story captured the heart of the initiative and the enthusiasm of MPS librarians as they prepare to take the library on the road.
“Access to books and a nurturing reading environment is vital for early literacy,” said Gina Batie, Cherokee Elementary's teacher-librarian and MPS Teacher of the Year. “The Read Play Talk Bus will allow us to help build home libraries and create interactive experiences that spark curiosity and foster learning.”
MPS teacher-librarians like Mandy Cumbey, Site Educator of the Year and librarian at Sadler Arts Academy, highlight the importance of early literacy in setting students up for success. “Books create endless opportunities for children to develop strong vocabularies and communication skills,” shared Cumbey. “Children immersed in stories from a young age are better equipped to excel in school and beyond.”
The Read Play Talk initiative encourages families to engage in reading, play, and conversation every day, laying a foundation for lifelong academic and personal growth. Through community events and educational opportunities, Read Play Talk offers hands-on ways for families to connect, share, and learn together.
